Time for the Sports World to Unite Against Pakistan

'How many deaths will it take till we know that too many people have died.'
                                                                                                     - Bob Dylan

India is scheduled to play Pakistan on 16th June 2019 in the Cricket World Cup. Should India still take the field? Should we play a sport with a country that supports the kind of terrorism that has killed our citizens for decades? How much is enough?

Historically, the sporting world has taken stands against countries that are sponsoring or committing acts of hatred and terror.

The best known example of this is South Africa during apartheid. The world came together and took a stand that they no longer believe a country that practices such atrocities should be allowed to interact and compete with the rest of the world.

In 1980 the USA, Japan, West Germany and China along with a number of other countries boycotted the Olympics in Moscow because of USSR's incursion in Afghanistan.

What if the cricketing world took a stand this World Cup? What if every team decided that they would inform the former World Cup winning Captain, who is now Prime Minister, Imran Khan, that no country will play against Pakistan in the World Cup unless they take action against state sponsored terrorism? The cricketing world did it with South Africa for years, so why does Pakistan get a pass?

I am a die-hard sports fan and nothing is more interesting than a rivalry match but if given a choice to never watch India-Pakistan play a cricket match or see an end to their state sponsored terrorism I would happily pass on ever watching India play Pakistan.

It is time the sporting world take a stand against a country that is murdering its neighbours on a regular basis. It is time the cricketing world unites against the horrific state sponsored terrorism and says NO MORE. It is time that we stop playing games with a nation that disregards any rule of law and lets terrorists roam free and sponsors their incursions.

Even if the cricketing world does not unite, India should take a stand. We must give a walkover to Pakistan on 16th June. If it costs us the World Cup- so be it.

  1. Well said... I'd trade a WC for a message that enough is enough.
