What to watch in 2011

The year in sports is pretty much done- Here is what to look forward to in 2011

Roger- Rafa- The Final Year

It may just be my gut feeling but I think this will be the final year of the Roger-Rafa rivalry. I don’t think either will retire after 2011 but after this year the two-man show will slowly die out. Having said that, this could be a year filled with tension and stress for tennis fans. As a Roger fan the season ending win gave me a lot to look forward to. Rafa fans probably looked at it as an anomaly in an all round great year. On January 17th the battle begins in Melbourne.

My Take- Rafa wins 2 slams, Roger wins one, and someone else wins one. Year-end 2011 Rafa #1, Roger # 2.

Cricket World Cup

Don’t let the recent drop in viewership of ODI’s fool you. The world cup is different. It is still the tournament where legends are made and destroyed. Kapil’s catch, Tendulkar’s innings after his father passed, Klusener’s heroics followed by a moment of anguish, Waugh’s sledge, South Africa’s chokes, Miandad doing a More and Sanath and Kalu changing the game. It all happens on the big stage and this time the stage is at home.

My Take- It is wide open. But India loses in the semi finals. South Africa, Australia and Sri Lanka battle it out for the cup.

Rugby World Cup- 9th September to 23rd October

Not a much-watched sport in India, Rugby can actually be one of the most entertaining sports for viewers. The All Blacks host this year’s event and as the number one team in the world they will be expected to go all the way. But South Africa is the defending champion and Australia and England are ready to make a push.

My Take- The All Blacks win it all; home field plays a huge part.

Lee-Hesh Act II

They’re back. With 23 Grand Slam titles between them, they have buried the hatchet, made peace and are together again. Probably two of the most successful sportsman to come out of India in the last 10 years they could have been invincible had they stuck together. But forget all that, the past is behind us.

My Take- They make a respectable showing in all slams, may be even two finals but don’t win one. I hope I am wrong.

Tiger Woods

It has been over a year since the incident. In 2010 he played his worst golf and finished the year without a PGA tour win. But the divorce is over, the media questions have died down and even the Tiger Woods joke forwards have stopped. In the final tournament of the year, as host, he showed signs of the Tiger of old before giving up a lead and eventually losing in a playoff. Will the baggage continue to be heavy? Or will Tiger Woods come back and take is rightful place at the top of the Golf World?

My Take- He comes back with a bang. Wins at least one grand slam and is in contention for the three others.
