Roger Federer and the World Series of Poker

Yes, I am writing a blog. It has been more than two months and I don't have an excuse on why I haven't written, at least not a good one. But with so much sports going on, I finally decided that I am writing again. So here is my take on Roger Federer and the sports event that has had me glued- the World Series of Poker. I haven't written on the World Cup because we are well in to the tournament. May be I will write when it is all over. Here goes...

Roger-

I have heard so many random theories on Roger Federer's early departure from Roland Garros and The Championships that I figure why not share mine. I am a die hard Roger Federer fan and it pains me to say this, but it is time we stop expecting him to win or reach the final of every grand slam he enters. That period is done. He is the greatest player to ever play the game but even he must lose eventually.

Do I think Roger has a couple of more slams in him? Yes. I think he will win a few more, may be even this years U.S. Open. But that period which we saw from 2004-2009 is over. Yet I hear theories from people about how he doesn't care anymore, how he has lost his concentration, how if he really wants to win he can beat anyone, how his kids have impacted him, the list goes on. I even heard a wild one about how his loss in an exhibition match to Sampras impacted him. The best part about these theories is they come from people like you and me. I guess my friends know Roger on a personal level to comment on what is going on in his head. I don't think there is anything going on in his head. I just think that a time comes in an athletes life when you can't do the things you did at your peak. It happens to every single athlete in the world.

Besides having won the most slams, I think Roger was also the greatest because of how he dominated the game from 2004-2009. That period is unheard of in most sports. What he did was unreal and that is unfortunately his curse. Because that is all that we know of him. We don't know any other Roger. We only know the guy who reaches every final and wins most of them. We don't know a guy who loses to the 12th seed at Wimbledon. We don't know the guy who loses to Hewitt on grass. Who is this man? And that is why everyone is shocked. I agree with some Facebook status updates, Wimbledon is not the same without Roger. But reality has hit my friends. We have to accept it.

People forget that in Sampras' last year he lost in the second round of Wimbledon to the 145th ranked player. This was a tournament he had won 7 times. It happens. He then won the US Open that year and retired.

I am not saying that Roger is done and should retire. I am not saying that he will not win again. I am not saying that we will not see one or two more Roger-Rafa classics. All I am saying is that if you still expect the Roger of 2004-2009 to be around, then you will be disappointed. It is very hard to see the start of the demise of a man whose matches I have watched nervously for years. But I have to come to terms with this fact. At next years wimbledon he will be just short of his 30th birthday. He is not the same guy and I don't think he every will be. So if he loses early, we can't stop watching the rest of the tournament. And if he wins again, believe me, we will feel more joy than we ever have for him.

I'll conclude with this statement for Roger fans, lets not fret, he is still the greatest of all time.

World Series of Poker

Most people I know play poker now, but I am still not sure how many people watch it. It is one of the most exciting things to watch. Just like any other sport, it has legends, upcoming stars, characters and tremendous excitement. The only difference is that the legends are still playing. Imagine seeing McEnroe, Sampras, Roger, Laver, Nadal, Tilden all in the same tournament and all at a level playing field. That is the beauty of poker. Age is no barrier, fitness is no barrier, entry in to tournaments is no barrier, all you need to do is buy in. Anyone can play and anyone can win. It is the truest form of open competition.

In the past 2 years I have started watching a lot of poker. And I have become a fan of many of the players much like I am a fan of other sportsman. Doyle, Daniel, Ivey and my personal favorite at the moment, Tom 'Durrrr' Dwan.

The World Series comprises of 57 different tournaments played over a 6 week span. I have followed most of them. Almost every day I find myself on the wsop website looking at chip stacks, who is leading, what tournaments are my favorite players playing and how they are doing.

I was shocked that I followed it this intently. Yes, I sometimes I go a little bit insane over sports but for an event like this, it surprised even me. I knew I was hooked when Tom 'Durrrr' Dwan was in the final table of an event and was making a run for a bracelet (that is what you get when you win a tournament). I followed that final table by hitting refresh on my screen every 5 minutes to stay updated. It was like I was following any other sports event. The excitement was killing me.

The reason I am writing this is to tell sports fans and poker players who don't watch poker to start watching. You wont regret it. The more you watch the more you will get in to it. The stories of some of these guys and how they became professional poker players are amazing. Some of the hands you will see will keep you talking like you were in the game. For any true sports fan, this is a must try.

As a starting point watch one of the previous years world series or high stakes poker season 4 on youtube. The main event kicked off today in Vegas. Hopefully next year, I will be playing in the series (setting the record for the fastest elimination ever)

More later.

  1. PRG where the hell have you been man? Glad you are writing again. When the world cup started, looked for your blog. When the bandh happened, looked for your blog. Continue to write bro..

Dont agree with your analysis of Roger. He said he is injured. He will be back in a few months like the Roger of old.

  2. Spot on analysis brother...Keep writing brother...

  3. About time you came back bro. Was starting to write a blog about your demise...

However, your piece on ROger was so off the mark its unreal. He will have one more 3 grand slam year. For sure....

  4. PRG is back baby!!!

Following the WSOP too.. I am on for next year for SURE....

  5. PRG you have to put Roger from 2004-07 in a separate category. He was winning slams and masters. During this period he would lose 4-5 matches a year tops. Then from 08-09 the masters stopped but his performance in slams were still there.

Now in 2010 on one hand he won the Aus Open playing brilliantly but hasnt come close to winning any other tournament(besides Madrid). Reasons are a lung infection early in the year and now a back and leg injury. Navratilova was able to pick up on his injury while commentating during his 1st round match by looking at his service action. So it all seems legit.

But in spite of that I agree the Federer of old is not there. In 2005 one could chalk up a win for him if he entered a tournament. Now he puts us through tense moments and disappointments like every other sportsman / team. So going by that a gradual decline seems to be the case, but seeing his reaction at his Wimbledon loss something tells me we can expect a small resurgence if his body holds up.

  6. Great to have you back Mr. Gandhi. It was about time. We missed you. I entirely agree with your views on Federer, but would like to add at present form and fitness Nadal is just unplayable.

  7. Roger is a little cry baby. No so called "champion" would ever make excuses about being injured, no matter what! He is a great talent, probably the best, but he is no Sampras, Laver or Borg. He is a whiny little baby that lacks the charisma and character of a sports champion. As for the so called fans, I have never seen a collection of so many bandwagon bitch supporters.

Durr is pretty amazing. Can't wait to see Helmuths' entrance this year.

  8. If hes injured hes injured. Why should he hide it? When he lost to Soderling at RG he said the guy was too good. Sampras never promoted tennis and despite everything hes achieved, its an accepted fact that he had zero charisma.

Borg and Laver? Seriously? These guys had zero coverage compared to Federer. I dont think theres even a full match of Laver available so I dont know what your basing your impression on?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Did the above person actually just talk about charisma? What does that have to do with anything?

I agree with SL's comment above. This could be the third type of Roger we are seeing. Could be painful to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Agree with you PRG.

I think his demise has begun. But the heights that he reached, his demise will take some time to really bring him down.

The person who wrote that he is whiny has no clue what he is talking about..

  11. A great sportsman does more than just win matches or revel in such lofty titles like "greatest player of all time". Why do we take human beings and amplify them to human Gods? What an oxymoron.

A great sportsman (sort of like all his other homosapian friends) is seen in how he rises after he falls, in how he handles his successes, his competition and afcourse his failures.

In Federer we have seen the sportsman on the rise and rise. We are now beginning to see the sportsman on his occassional failures - back pain, leg pain, nothing pretty to say about competition...is just all pain in the ass kind of pain if you ask me.

Usher in the real Federer - the whiner and winner. Can his die hard fans see that? Or will they only see the end of his "golden era".

We want shine, we want heroes without little specks of dust and dirt. So we get them for a while and then we die of shock and we rant and rage. Knock knock whose there? Ttttttiger Woods. Rrrrrroger Federer. Sssssachin Tendulkar (my ferrari doesn't need to pay tax remember)...

  12. Nadal has made a comeback after several injuries, loss of confidence, personal issues - self admitted...if that was Federer his fans would be sowing seeds in the hills of Switzerland extolling his extraordinary character. Do people extend that for Nadal? no way! He just ain't shiny enough with the butt scratching, grunting and trying too hard business.

  13. My friends and I have been missing your blog for the last few weeks. Unfortunately, I am not a Tennis follower and I have no clue about Poker, so I am not able to comment on this blog, but do keep writing. You have a huge following and growing.

  14. Nadal gets his fair share of adulation. Sure he's overshadowed by Federer, but he gets a lot of respect, from Federer fans included. In fact the past greats are already talking about him overtaking Feds grand slam tally...

Alisha Im not sure where you get Federer the winner and whiner. His timing to talk about his injuries is certainly questionable but everytime he loses a set he gets asked about his health. Im exaggerating here but thats what he has been dealing with in some sense. Yes he blamed his loss to Berdych on fitness. However, when he lost to Soderling last month and Del Potro at the US Open last year he was frank about getting beaten by the better player on the day. As for nothing pretty to say about the competition thats simply not true...

    ReplyDelete
  15. SL,

I may have been prone to some of my own exaggeration when I say that he doesn't have a pretty word to say about competition. He has been a very gracious winner - complimenting his opponents etc. However, off late he has also shown that he is a whiner...Check out the below link

    http://www.time.com/time/quotes/0,26174,2000911,00.html

Have you heard anyone say things like that when they loose to Federer repeatedly?

When asked if he would watch the Wimbeldon final when he lost he said "no i am going on vacation"...umm ok then.

I like watching Federer play and i don't agree with PRG that his winning streak is on the change...you can't dismiss a naturally gifted player like Federer.

But what I truly love is watching Nadal win. He may not be the "greatest tennis player" in the history of the universe (known and unknown) but he doesn't whine and he always fights a good fight. And no, it's not all about loving the underdog -)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Alisha, unfortunately youve been a victim of bad media reporting. Heres the link to the full interview below.

The quote has been taken from the last 2 questions, out of context as is often the case. As strange as it sounds that quote is Federer defending the quality of the other players. Once you read it you will see where his sarcasm was directed.

I agree on Nadal being a class act. If Federer wasnt around he'd probably be my favourite player. Though there is a reason why Federer is voted best sportsman by his peers year after year instead of Nadal but thats another topic altogether.

But yes Nadal's definitely not the underdog by any stretch! Anyone who supports him because of that is just kidding himself/herself.

  17. Sorry I meant voted best sportmanship award, not best sportsman.

the persistent inability to have an erection or to maintain
it for a sufficient amount of time. Erectile dysfunction
is often called impotence though this is not precise,
because impotence includes other symptoms, like
