Slumdog, Elections, IPL, Sports- Some more random thoughts with no real focus

Small tidbits of news that kept me entertained the last few days. Slumdog Kids, more election banter, IPL and sports in general. Random thoughts with no real focus.

Did you hear about the Slumdog Kids? They excelled in their exams...YAY!!!.......Frankly, who gives a sh*t. I don't mean to be rude to the kids, they were the best part of the movie, but seriously, I don't care how they scored in their exams. More importantly, by printing the exam results of these kids the press is really invading in to their privacy. Leave them alone guys, its not fair and its quite boring to read too. Let them lead their lives. How would you like it if your kids exam results were printed in the paper?

Rahul Gandhi got himself in a nice little soup with the press conference the other day. He managed to offend some of the Congress's allies. Now Congress party members are saying he will not be part of the post-poll alliance discussions. Wow, threw the bugger under the bus right away huh Congress? I think that is all talk though, Rahul will be involved. Also like all election stories this one will be forgotten in a couple of days. Unless of course Lalu and Ram Vilas Paswan lose a lot of ground, then I am sure they will find a way to blame Rahul.

Well done Delhi by the way. Nice turnout to vote. Also, to all you Mumbai fools who did not vote. We have a state election coming up in a few months. So make sure you are registered, finish all your vacations before hand and definitely go and vote.

Nice interview of SRK in the Bombay Times yesterday. It seems that he actually gets what it means to be the owner of the sports team. All this while he came across as a guy who thought that with his star power, ability to get sponsors and with the fervor his presence creates, that he would be able to create the biggest brand in the game. While KKR might be the most valuable team today, I think he has realized that unless they win, the value will only go down. For the first time he came across as humble and honest (only slightly annoying). He talks about how the team needs to win, because all the rest is not important. I guess he got his wake up call.

All great franchises across the world, Liverpool, Man United, Barca, New York Yankees, L.A. Lakers, Celtics, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers etc. etc. all have a history of winning. That is the only way you remain a big brand in sports.  It doesn't matter if you have 10 sponsors or even legends like Sachin and Sanath as in the case of Mumbai, winning is the only important thing. SRK seems to have got the message. May be now he will focus on getting a good team and coach in place rather than a good music video for the team.

Three More Points

1) I just realized that KKR may have less wins than logos on their uniforms. Wow!!

2) How good was the Chelsea-Barca game the other night? Thats why I love sports. Can't wait for the final.

3) For all you sports fans out there, YouTube the 2009 Kentucky Derby. A 50-1 underdog, Mine that Bird, came from no where to win it. Worth a watch.

  2. I don't think the press conference hurts Rahul Gandhi at all. I watched it and I think he conducted himself extremely well. Mamta Banerjee has already come out saying that she is not offended. Now if Paswan and Lalu behave like children there is nothing we can do about it.

  3. Nice article on SRK and KKR. He really is a super star. What a lovely message he sent to his team (refer to the Bombay Times front page , 8th May)

  4. See PG I think they need a player with a #4 on it to actually build a legacy - or a lot of coke when it comesto the 'boys. On a serious note - the interesting thing about sports brands it that once they have reached a certain level they remain large brands - Green Bay went numerous years prior to winning again and the 'boys have not won anything in the playofss in a VERY long time but they are still great brands.

One more thing on Mine the Bird - if you watch closely the jockey's leg is trapped between the horse and the rail actually scraping the rail, but they still came out of there momentum intact. Also, the jockey actually won the derby a few years ago.

  5. I agree Milind. The Packers won in the 30's and then really turned it up in the 60's under Coach Lombardi. Once you are established as a brand a few dry years is alright. By that time Green Bay was already Titletown USA. Another example (even though they are not a private franchise) are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. We all know what a strong brand they are because of the success they have had in the past. They have not won a National Title since 1988 but still they are the most glorified franchise in College Sports.

So 20 or 25 years from now I think the IPL will have its own legacy teams. In addition we will have a lot more teams than just 8. Most people aged around 30 or so have not seen a sports league develop. I for one am pretty excited to watch a sports league develop over the years.

  6. SRK is the poor man's version of Mark Cuban.
