Some really random thoughts with no real focus 1

Read some stories in the paper today found them quite amusing and confusing. Wrote up some random thoughts on them. Hope you find them as amusing and confusing as I did.

Karuna's fast

Alright this might be mean and silly because it was "supposedly for a good cause", but did anyone else find Karunanidhi's 6 hour fast hilarious? If you see the pictures in the TOI you might see the humor in it. Now, I am not debating whether this fast was for a good cause or whether it was a political move to get votes. What I do think is that it was down right hilarious.

Picture this if you will (and read it in a suspense filled tone). It is 6 am, Karunanidhi, a pretty "healthy" man (ok fine he is fat) lays down, as if he is Mahatma Gandhi, on a bed, ready to sacrifice his life for the Tamil's. The tension in the air is sickening. He is surrounded by his family and supporters all hoping that he will break his fast or that the violence in Sri Lanka will be halted, else this world will claim another martyr. The sight is sad and emotional. Karunanidhi lays there without moving. Family members weep by his side. The stage is set much like Gandhi's fasts back in the day. Then suddenly......as the world waits with baited breath.....it happens......6 hours later.......just in time for lunch....he breaks his fast. Whew, what a relief.

The world is now debating whether that this can be classified as a fast or did he just skip a meal? He was also lying on the bed as if he had not eaten for 15 days and the weakness had overwhelmed him. Now I have gone for six hours without food, frankly at those times I don't lie down as if my life depended on it. But what would the fast be without the Ekta Kapoor style drama? The fat man eventually did get hungry at lunch and so grabbed a bite. According to another blog he already knew a peace offering was going to be announced. Whether it was a true fast or a politically motivated one, in the words of Barney from How I Met Your Mother, it was Legen "wait for it" dary.

Dry Day

I have never really understood the whole "dry day" concept thing in India. No drinks to be sold in bars or liquor stores. I am not an alcoholic or anything, and frankly a dry day rarely impacts me, but can someone explain the concept to me? The government announced dry days from 5 pm on the 28th till 5 pm on the 30th because of the elections.

What does the government expect to happen between 5 pm today and 5 pm on the 30th with regards to liquor consumption? Do they think voters will be too hungover to vote? Or is that we will all be too drunk going in to the polls and so may vote for the wrong person? Election staff at each polling station taking breath tests to determine the level of consumption. If you have had more than two vodka's you need a designated voter who comes in with you and helps you vote for the right person. Seriously, don't understand the dry day's for elections. But then again there are so many rules I don't understand, so what is another one...

  1. like bands are illegal so should be fasts where dry days are concerned it is outdated concept in any case it should be only be during votind timings if at all

  2. PG - From what I understand - political parties distribute liquor for free during elections to influence voters to vote for the respective political party - so in order to remove this technique used by political parties - liquor sale is banned.

  3. I meant Bandhs not bands...

  4. Vineet - I believe your understanding to be truly perplexing and preposterous.

To stop parties from 'buying' votes by distributing free alcohol we have a DRY DAY for 2 DAYS? If that is the case, is the Government too stupid to realise that the aforementioned parties could just hoard alcohol before the 28th of April??

I can think of no logical reason why Election Days are Dry Days. No idea.

  5. Election days are dry days in the interest of public order on a day which is generally considered to be sensitive.

It's the same reason why people aren't allowed to assemble in groups numbering more than five on days of the election.

Sure it's a little archaic..but the logic is the 'greater good'.
