An Ode to Sports in 2019

What a year in sports, it's been really exciting;
A number of champions, went down fighting.
It’s time once again, for a year-end summary;
2019, filled us with memories.

Let’s start with cricket, it was a World Cup year;
The final was tied, the outcome brought tears.
The number of fours, determined the winner;
The rule is so sickening, I threw up my dinner.
NZ were robbed, without another chance;
But a rule is a rule, ‘Twas England’s dance.

Nadal and Djoko dominated the courts,
Federer losing Wimbledon, boggled us with thoughts.
Four different women, winning each of the majors;
Serena came close, but in finals caused no danger.
We’re still really pleading, the young ones come through;
It’s almost 2020, someone new is due.

It looked all sown up, by Liverpool in Jan;
Things then turned sour, just don’t ask their fans.
They haven’t won it all, since 1990;
Don’t choke Reds, it’s time for your party.
Jose is at Tottenham, is it a desperate move?
Or can ‘The Special One', get the Spurs into a groove.
Knowing Liverpool’s history, the race will get close;
There’s a lot of football left, who’ll win? God knows.

Hamilton won his sixth, one short of Michael’s seven,
He is undoubtedly, all of sports greatest legends.
PV Sindhu, won the world championships in Basel,
But the Indian shooters, are the ones who really dazzled.
Fifteen of them qualified, for Tokyo 2020,
Expectations will be high, for medals that are shiny

In the Rugby World Cup, the All Blacks were stunned,
In the final against South Africa, the Brits were outgunned.
The IPL final, came down to the last ball;
Mumbai Indians won, the owners had a ball.  

The Golden State Warriors were denied a three-peat,
Toronto NBA Champs, ‘Oh Canada’ on repeat.
The Lakers missed the playoffs, is Lebron really done?
Not even a chance, this season he’s only won.

Russia gets banned for performance enhancing drugs,
It’s about time, all their sportspersons are thugs.
The Game Changers doc, made athletes vegetarian,
They say give up meat, or always come second.


But the moment of the year, involved the Big Cat,
His focus, discipline and game was intact.
As he strode that Sunday, in a familiar setting,
The world watched and hoped for history in the making.
A miraculous comeback, that no one had foreseen,
Tiger Woods once again, wears a jacket that’s green.

Next year has the Olympics, and the usual seasons,
To watch every event, sports fans need no reason.
Drama, close finishes and thrills aplenty.
I can’t wait for sports in the year 2020.

While I do admire that Mrs. Meera Sanyal took it upon herself to be an instrument of change, I just wish the instrument was better tuned before it began playing in the orchestra. When it comes to representing south Mumbai and being a member of parliament, I am afraid Meera Sanyal is in unfamiliar waters and it is clear that she has no idea what she is doing. I had the opportunity to hear Mrs. Meera Sanyal, Mr. Milind Deora (Congress), Mr. Mohan Rawale (Shiv Sena), Dr. Mona Shah (Professionals Party of India) and Mr. Bala Nandgaonkar (MNS) speak at an event organized at Altamount Road in South Mumbai this evening. It was a great platform for voters to meet their candidates and get to know what they are all about. I was most curious to see what Meera Sanyal was like. The Left is gone the Left is gone. My flu is still here but the Left is gone. And if I had to choose between tolerating a fever for a few more days or tolerating the Left for a few more years I would choose the former. Here are some initial thoughts on the results, the winners, losers and the lessons we learned. I would love some comments here, because I could be way off the mark in my assessments and would love to get your perspective. Here we go  Yay for Stability - As I mentioned in my last blog I was alright with either the UPA or NDA coming in to power, but was only concerned about the partners they would have to choose. The Congress' performance took that concern and flung it out of the window. We will now have a stable government. Shahrukh Khan and Security

I feel bad for Shahrukh Khan. I really do. When I get a off a flight all I want to do is just get the hell out of the airport. To be detained for two hours, questioned and not allowed to make a phone call, it must be painful. But at the same time I have to say that in the terror filled world that we live in, sometimes, each and every one of us has to go through this. Even beloved Bollywood superstars. I don't have an issue with SRK's anger, I would be fuming too. I don't have an issue with the media coverage of the event. SRK is a huge celebrity and press coverage was expected. The area that I have an issue with is when people say what happened to SRK was wrong. I firmly believe that superstar or no superstar, each person has to go through the same random checks as we all do. Today it is SRK and so people are upset.
