South Mumbai Elections Heating Up
With BJP losing the South Mumbai seat to Shiv Sena most pundits believed that Milind Deora had locked up his second election. Not so fast though, the South Mumbai race is getting interesting. The Shiv Sena has fielded Mohan Rawale a sitting MP from the South Central Mumbai constituency, part of which has been relocated to be part of South Mumbai. The BSP is also apparently fielding a candidate in South Mumbai who is supposed to eat in to the votes of the sitting MP. Seems like a regular election right? Well all that changed these past few days.
Meera Sanyal, the head of ABN Amro Bank, announced her candidacy for the South Mumbai seat. In addition to this Dr. Mona Patel Shah announced her intention to run and she is supported by the Professionals Party of India, a relatively new party that is gaining some momentum with the political unrest in the city post the Mumbai attacks of last November.
Few thoughts. Firstly, congratulations to both Mrs. Sanyal and Dr. Shah. A lot of people were angry, talked about change and made a lot of noise post the Mumbai attacks. These two individuals walked the talk and are standing for elections. Kudos.
Secondly, what does this mean for Milind Deora? Both Mrs. Sanyal and Dr. Shah will tap in to the very voting population that Milind managed to grab in the last election. Mrs. Sanyal is a former Cathedral School student, as well as an alumni from Insead. She is also very well known in the business community. Dr. Shah and the Professionals Party of India are very focused on being competitive and will carry a lot of weight with them as well. Moreover a lot of people are looking for change and a fresh perspective.
I do not know if either Meera Sanyal or Dr. Shah have the backing to take on either Milind Deora or Mohan Rawale. However, what they can do is eat in to the votes of both candidates. While it may seem that Milind will be most impacted by these two entrants, one truly wont know till the voting begins. It is going to be an exciting race. Enjoy it.

Good point Pg...what sucks in all this is that the election commission only requires a candidate to be declared 25-30 days before election date. That leaves very little time for the voting public to get to know the candidate and make an informed choice. So for independants with great intentions but possibly not a large machinery that kicks in once they announce they will run (like the Congress or Sena or BJP) - seems like one additional strike against them. Net net the end looser always ends up being the voting public though. But vote we MUST unlike what's being advertised by http://bleedindia.com/. Alisha
ReplyDeleteAdd to this the issue of delimitation, and the fact that all the entrenched candidate's polling catchments have been wiped out in some instances - will make this an interesting election to watch. Funny you chose to write about this, was just having a very similar argument with a friend a couple of days ago! Good job though with the blog - Cyrus
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad these two women aren't running against someone like Govinda, because I thought Milind Deora was quite good! But I fail to see how much people can influence Mumbai while sitting in the Lok Sabha. People of this caliber are urgently needed in our local and state governments compared to the LS.
